Eight Chef Lorianne has jetted off to the United Kingdom and United States of America to experience other fresh and seasonal kitchens, and learn from these leaders.

Chef, author and proprietor of Chez Panisse, Alice Waters, is also the Vice President of Slow Food International, and was a pioneer of the philosophy that cooking should be based on the finest and freshest seasonal ingredients that are produced sustainably and locally - pretty much what we strive to here at Eight. A Meeting of Minds

In a rare South African collaboration between art and business, Union House in Commercial Street, Cape Town, is a space that nurtures crafts and enterprise. The closed façade of the three-storey canary-yellow heritage building conceals an air of enviable creative industry. Its soaring interior is a stimulating space of original timber flooring and ceiling beams, industrial structural elements and an ever expanding whimsical collection of eclectic vintage furnishings, increasingly from the mid-20th century. The building itself predates this era, harking back to 1895 and a chequered history as a warehouse and factory. In its cathedral-like interiors, artists, crafters and industry professionals practice their skills.

Eerste Rivier Hospital Community Garden

Two months ago 21 Spier volunteers joined Soil for Life at the Eerste Rivier Hospital gardens. This joint partnership aimed at setting up a vegetable and herb garden at the hospital in just one day!

The community garden was planned to assist in the need for better healthcare through food and education, as well as providing psychosocial support to aids patients through gardening activities and giving them a means to support their families.

Elma worked in the steel manufacturing industry before joining Spier six years ago. She thinks the reasons that she excels in her role as the Head of Customer Services team is due to loving what she does and facing the challenges her daily tasks bring. Elma also assists Sales Director Bryan Culhane and manages the wine samples for Spier.

A lot of bling for our blocks

Spier Creative Block, our range of blended wines, has leapt onto the international stage, winning Golds and Silvers left right and centre at the world’s top wine competitions this month. This follows their sensational achievements at Veritas last year where two wines in the range achieved Double Gold Medals and the third achieved a Gold.

These wines are firm favourites at dinner parties as the story behind the wines is a great conversation starter, and the range really helps to support local artists.

Spier introduces Heinrich Opperman

Heinrich, better known as Bones because of his wiry frame, joined the Spier cellar team in 2008 after a brief stint at another cellar. He remembers doing health and safety training on his first day at Spier. He believes his enthusiasm and eagerness to learn are his strong points, and have helped him to succeed in his job especially during harvest time when the pressure is high.
